How to Adjust Marine Cylinders to Reduce Engine Load

2022-12-09

The continued depression of the global economy, high oil prices, and the continuous improvement of standards for reducing greenhouse gas emissions have forced shipping companies to reduce the load of main engines to reduce costs. For variable-speed diesel engine, if the load (rotation speed) is reduced, although the fuel consumption rate will be reduced, it will deviate from the optimal working condition of the design. On the one hand, poor fuel combustion, carbon deposits on pistons and piston rings will reduce thermal efficiency, and on the other hand, poor lubrication will aggravate various The wear of the friction pair increases the unsafe factor. For safety and to improve the thermal efficiency of the diesel engine at low load, please take the following measures when the structure of the original components remains unchanged.

The load of the main engine is reduced, the fuel injection quantity of each working cycle is reduced, the corresponding acid products are reduced, and the cylinder oil required for each working cycle is reduced. The oil injection quantity of the cylinder oil (total base number TBN remains unchanged) is appropriately reduced, which saves cylinder oil. , without affecting the normal lubrication, but also reduce the coking and carbon deposits in the combustion chamber so as to reduce the abrasive wear between the piston ring and the cylinder liner.

How much is it appropriate to reduce the cylinder oil injection quantity?
It should be based on theoretical calculations and practical inspections:
●Theoretical Calculation——Calculate and determine the amount of fuel injected into the cylinder according to the reduction ratio of the fuel injection amount per revolution of the main engine (called "load regulation").
Assuming that the oil injection volume in the calibration working condition is Ab, the oil injection volume A=60% Ab for the main engine to reduce load and operate at 60% of the calibration load.
●Findings from the actual inspection—coking, wear, residual cylinder oil, etc. on the wall surface of the cylinder liner and piston ring.
The final adjustment result should be slightly higher than the theoretical calculation value (because of other unfavorable factors), and not lower than 40% of the calibrated oil injection volume.
The amount of cylinder oil injection should be lowered several times.
Every time you adjust, check after running for a period of time to determine the best value.
