Removal and installation of timing chains for four Mercedes-Benz models

2020-09-10

ML350/E350/SLK350/CLS350 (3.5L 272)

1. Removal of timing chain
(1) Disconnect the battery ground wire.
(2) Remove the ignition coil.
(3) Remove the spark plug.
(4) Remove the exhaust camshaft and intake camshaft at the right cylinder head.
(5) Use special tools to disconnect the old engine timing chain.

2. Installation of timing chain
(1) Pull in the new engine timing chain and riveting.
(2) Rotate the crankshaft in the direction of the engine to 55° before the ignition top dead center of the cylinder (the 305° mark on the pulley). At this time, the marks on the exhaust camshaft and intake camshaft impulse wheel on the left cylinder head must be located in the center of the camshaft Hall sensor hole.
(3) Rotate the crankshaft at a 95° crankshaft angle in the direction of the engine's operation so that it is at 40° after the top dead center of the cylinder ignition.
(4) Install the exhaust camshaft and intake camshaft on the right cylinder head in the basic position. The mark on the camshaft adjuster is aligned with the top, and the mark on the camshaft adjuster is aligned with the contact surface of the cylinder head cover.
(5) Correctly install the balance shaft at 40° after the ignition top dead center. The assembly pin must be aligned with the mark on the crankcase, and the notch on the front balance weight must be aligned with the mark.
(6) Rotate the crankshaft, and then check the basic position of the camshaft at the crankshaft angle of 55° before the ignition top dead center with the front cover installed on the cylinder head.
(7) The mark on the pulley must be aligned with the positioning edge on the timing chamber cover, and the mark on the pulse wheel must be located in the center of the sensor hole.
(8) Install spark plugs.
(9) Install the ignition coil.
(10) Test the operating conditions of the engine and check whether the engine leaks.
