Five precautions for using turbochargers

2020-03-11

The exhaust supercharger uses the exhaust gas to drive the turbine at high speed. The turbine drives the pump wheel to pump air to the engine, thereby increasing the intake pressure and increasing the intake air in each cycle, so that the combustible mixture is close to lean combustion with an air-fuel ratio of less than 1, Improved engine power and torque, making the car more powerful. However, because exhaust gas turbochargers often work at high speeds and high temperatures, the following five items should be paid attention to when using:

  • 1.Use clean oil to clean and replace the oil filter in time

The floating bearing of the supercharger has high requirements for lubricating oil. Clean supercharger engine oil should be used according to regulations. The engine oil must be cleaned, if any dirt penetrates into the engine oil, it will accelerate the wear of the bearings. When the bearings are worn excessively, the blades will even friction with the casing to reduce the rotor speed, and the performance of the supercharger and diesel engine will deteriorate rapidly.

  • 2. After the engine is started, it should avoid entering the high-speed running state immediately.

Being able to increase speed in a short period of time is a major feature of turbocharged cars. In fact, violently blasting the throttle right after starting will easily damage the turbocharger oil seal. The turbocharged engine has a high number of revolutions. After starting the vehicle, it should run at idle speed for 3-5 minutes to allow the oil pump sufficient time to deliver the oil to various parts of the turbocharger. At the same time, the temperature of the oil slowly rises. The liquidity is better, and at this time the speed will be "like a fish".

  • 3. The engine should be idle or run at low speed for several minutes before stalling before the engine stalls at high speed.

Do not stop the engine immediately when the engine is running at high speed or continuously under heavy load. When the engine is operating, a part of the oil is supplied to the turbocharger rotor bearings for lubrication and cooling. After the running engine suddenly stopped, the oil pressure quickly dropped to zero, the high temperature of the turbo part of the supercharger was transferred to the middle, and the heat in the bearing support shell could not be taken away quickly, while the supercharger rotor was still running at high speed under inertia. Therefore, if the engine is stopped in a hot engine state, the oil stored in the turbocharger will overheat and damage the bearings and shafts.

  • 4. Clean and replace the air filter element in time

The air filter will be blocked due to excessive dust and debris during long-term use. At this time, the air pressure and flow at the inlet of the compressor will decrease, causing the performance of the exhaust turbocharger to weaken. At the same time, you should also check whether the air intake system is leaking. If there is a leak, dust will be sucked into the air pressure casing and enter the cylinder, causing early wear of the blades and diesel engine parts, leading to deterioration of the performance of the supercharger and the engine.

  • 5. Lubricant should be filled in time if necessary

In any of the following cases, the lubricant must be filled regularly. When the oil and oil filter have been replaced, if it has been parked for a long time (more than one week), and the external ambient temperature is too low, you must loosen the oil inlet connector of the turbocharger and fill it with clean oil when filling the oil. When lubricating oil is injected, the rotor assembly can be rotated so that each lubricating surface is sufficiently lubricated before being used again.
